Behind three steel doors, a mountain vault stores more than 1.2 million seed samples from almost every country.

The vault stays at minus 18 degrees Celsius even if its cooling system fails, thanks to the surrounding permafrost.

Withdrawals are rare: the first major one came in 2015 to rebuild a collection lost to conflict.
